Christian Education - Adult
At Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, disciples of all ages are called to continue their journey of faith. From Sunday mornings to mid-week offerings and occasional on-line opportunities, it is the goal of our adult education program to equip disciples for faithful living. From special programs during the various seasons of the church year, e.g. Lent, to internationally acclaimed speakers and ministers from around the globe, to simple weekly opportunities to grow in faith, there is something for everyone at GPMC.
Sunday Morning Opportunities- 10:10 - 10:50 a.m.
Sunday morning adult education usually offers two opportunities for growth: an A La Carte offering and The Series. From time to time we also have special speakers. From tools for daily living to theology and biblical studies, we have offerings for people on all stages of their faith journey.
A La Carte
Insights - On most first Sundays of the month, Rev. Peter Henry will share insights for his sermon on that day that he gleaned from one of our Sunday school classes.
Pause for Parents - On the second Sunday of each month we will discuss a topic related to raising our children. From technology to the spiritual benefits of physical exercise, this once-a-month offering is perfect for parents and grandparents.
Religion in the News - On the third Sunday of the month, one of our staff members will lead a conversation about one of the religious topics which appear in the news with great frequency.
The Series
The Abrahamic Faiths - November 6, 13 & 20. In an age of increasing religious plurality and religious tension, it is helpful to know what some of our nearest neighbors in faith belive. Join Rev. Susan Mozena for this three-week study of the faith traditions that trace their roots to Abraham: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The Cradle of Our Faith - December 4, 11 & 18. In preparation for the January visit of our Ecumenical Minister from Jordan, Rev. Peter Henry will lead this series on Christianity in the Middle East: the Cradle of Our Faith. Come learn about the origins, strengths and declining numbers of Christians from this pivotal region of the world.
College, Inc. - January 8, 15, & 22. Using the videos produced by Front Line, Rev. Matthew Parker Wrzeszcz will lead a discussion about the impact of the for-profit industry on university education in America.
Faith in the Workplace - Feb. 12, 19 & 26. Rev. Susan Mozena and other GPMC professionals will lead a discussion of the way in which faith enters into our professional lives. From ethics to faith conversations, come hear others talk about the role and place of faith in the workplace.
Special Speakers and Offerings

Mid-Week Offerings September 14, 21 & 28: 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.
The Development of the Biblical Canon- The Rev. Dr. Lynne A. Kogel will
focus on the Gospel of Mark, exploring the Codex Sinaiticus and helping us to
discover what it can tell us about the development of the Biblical Canon. In
1844, Constantine Tischendorf, a German Biblical scholar, visited the Monastery
of St. Catherine at the foot of Mount Sinai. There the monks showed him a
manuscript in Greek, now known as the Codex Sinaiticus. It is a 4th Century
Christian Bible containing the oldest complete New Testament.
Monday mornings: 10 - 11 A.M. The
Preacher’s Workshop—Join Rev. Peter Henry for a discussion of the
upcoming Sunday’s preaching text. No special expertise in
the Bible is required!
1st Monday Evenings: 7 p.m. to ??, starting up on January 2, 2012. Theology and Film-
Join Rev. Matthew Parker Wreszcz for a night of theological
reflection upon contemporary films. Past selections have included Chocolat, Gran Turino and Babette's Feast.
3rd Monday Evenings: 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., starting on September 19. Ecumenical Minister's Bible Study.

Congregation of the Central Chuch of Africa Presbyterian in Mzuzu,
Malawi. The leader on the Malawian side will be our 2011
Ecumenical Minister from Malawi, the Rev. Dr. Timothy Nyasulu.
Tuesday mornings, 7:00 a.m. Women's Bible study-
Join Rev. Mozena and other women of the church for a 45 minute mid-week
study that will start your day right and keep you headed in the right
direction. The group is open to the Spirit, having started with
"Uppity Women of the Bible," then moving to the Gospel of John and now
on to the book of Job.
Wednesday mornings, 7 A.M. - 7:45 a.m. Men’s
Bible Study—Join Rev. Peter Henry and other
members of the church in a weekly Bible study that often pairs
theological reflections with Scripture. We read
the entire Bible in 2010, followed it up with a four month study of the
Gospel of Matthew, and are just now finishing up Men Worth Knowing,
a set of readings and reflections by J. Ellsworth Kalas. We start up
a new study on October 12, 2011: the Gospel of John, the most unique and poetic of the four Gospels.

enjoying the theological conversations that arise from it.

January 23, 25 and 27 (9:30 - 11:00 a.m.) & January 24 and January 26 (7-8:30 p.m.): Ecumenical Minister Seminars- The
Rev. Samer Azar, a Lutheran minister from Amman, Jordan, joins us as
our 2012 Ecumenical Minister. He will lead two sets of seminars
(3 in the morning and 2 in the evening, with the same material to be
covered in both the morning and evening sessions) on the Christian
presence in the Middle East, issues facing them, and the wider context
of life in the Middle East.
