Music at Memorial Concert Series

Music at Memorial is a ministry of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. Its mission is to inspire the worship, educational, and outreach activities of the congregation, and to enrich the community with performances of faith-based music.

All Music at Memorial concerts are free and open to the public. 

We welcome contributions of time, talent, and treasure in support of our ongoing concert series. The generosity of our donors makes it possible to continue to bring outstanding musical performances to the community. 2026 – 2027 Season

Detroit Bachtet Debut Concert
Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 7 pm

The Detroit Bachtet (UO) is Southeast Michigan’s premier ensemble focused on performing music from the Baroque and before, and Contemporary/Modern eras, spanning from about 1250-1750 and from 1990-present day. Directed by Peyton Fleming, the ensemble is dedicated to highlighting vocal artists in the SE Michigan area, music and/or composers that have been previously under appreciated, under-recognized, un-recognized, and the continuously oppressed, including women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, diasporic origin, and many more.

Hell's Bells: Organ Halloween Concert
Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 3 pm

Minister of Music and Organist at Grosse Pointe Memorial, Dr. Logan Hamilton, presents a Halloween concert featuring music that rings in terror and delight from classical repertoire by JS Bach, Louis Vierne, and Joseph Rhienberger to music from classic movies such as The Exorcist and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. A light reception will be held after the concert. 

An Advent-ful Journey
Sunday, December 13, 2026 at 3 pm

The Sanctuary Choir presents a choral concert centered around the journey of pastoral, country sides found in Randall Thompson’s Frostiana, a work that takes poetry by Robert Frost and set to music for choir and chamber orchestra. Other works by Carson Cooman, Anna Lapwood, Morten Lauridsne, Nico Muhly, and Will Todd will also be presented that will contribute to the winter’s journey for peace and joy during the holiday season. A light reception will be held after the concert.

Sweet Treats Vocal Showcase
Sunday, February 14, 2027 at 3 pm

Join the unique talents of the individual voices that make up the Sanctuary Choir as they present a fund-raising showcase for the Music at Memorial Concert series! This event will be in Fellowship Hall and will be a casual afternoon of music making and fun! 

Good Friday Tenebrae Service featuring Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living
Friday, March 26, 2027

The Sanctuary Choir presents Dan Forrest’s highly esteemed work, Requiem for the Living which made its debut in 2013 and performed in Carnegie Hall with a full orchestra in 2014. The Sanctuary Choir will present this work with a chamber orchestra as part of the Tenebrae liturgy, in which the composer has noted that the work, “A Requiem, at its core, is a prayer for rest- traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements of Requiem for the Living, however, form a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow, as for the dead.” 

Centennial Celebration of the Sanctuary 
Sunday, May 16, 2027 at 3 pm

The Sanctuary Choir joins forces with the Detroit Bachtet in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Grosse Pointe Memorial’s Sanctuary! The program will feature Sequina DeBose and Michael Fowler as soloists on works by Margaret Bonds, Nathaniel Dett, and Will Todd. A light reception will be held after the concert.
