Theology at the Movies

What happens when unimaginable evil becomes part of the everyday?

Join us for Theology at the Movies, as we gather to watch and discuss The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer’s haunting 2023 film about the family of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, who lived with their children in a comfortable home directly beside the concentration camp.

The film never shows the horrors of Auschwitz directly. Instead, we hear them. We see ordinary family life—meals, gardening, birthdays and conversations—taking place alongside the sounds of suffering and mass murder. In doing so, The Zone of Interest forces us to wrestle with deeply uncomfortable questions about evil, complicity, indifference, and what it means to see—or refuse to see—the suffering of our neighbors.

As people of faith, what does the Holocaust ask of us? How do we understand the human capacity for both goodness and terrible evil? Where is God in the face of such suffering? And what does it mean to love our neighbors when it is easier to look away?

Come for the film, stay for the conversation. No previous theological or film knowledge is necessary—just a willingness to watch, listen, and wrestle together.

We will also be visiting the Zekelman Center on November 1, click here to learn more about joining our group.
